About Sziget Festival
The Sziget festival takes its name from the Hungarian word for Island. This week long event is held on a leafy and beautiful 266 acre island situated on the river Danube, outside Northern Budapest during the late summer month of August. It is one of the largest music and culture festivals that takes place in Europe, growing from a selective and friendly student event that first took place in 1993. By 1997 the total attendance of the event had grown to over quarter of a million souls, establishing it as one of the world’s premier party events.
If you want a diverse and truly intriguing musical selection then you can do a whole dimension worse than the Sziget festival. This event is nothing if not multi-layered, with a range of different sounds and audio experiences punctuating the many sonic destinations across the site. Expect genres ranging from Jazz and the Blues through to all kinds of Hip Hop and world rhythms clamouring for a place on your agenda.
Many journalists and cultural commentators have tried to draw comparisons between Sziget and some of the US’s popular events, at times calling this festival Eurowoodstock and describing it as Europe’s alternative to Burning Man. The event is very popular with Western Europeans, but due to the size and expansive nature of this party you can expect to get caught up with a very eclectic crowd with revellers drawn from all four corners of the globe. Needless to say this creates an exciting and inclusive vibe that’s as warm and friendly as you want it to be.
