About Roskilde Festival
Roskilde is held annually in Denmark. This four day event is usually held at the end of June or the beginning of July and commences on a Thursday then rolls off into the whole weekend. It started life off in 1971 as the brainchild of two high school students and a promoter, before evolving into its current form as a non-profit organisation that sits behind a network of support for music, culture and humanism.
The line-up at Roskilde is usually composed of well over 150 acts spanning the entire palette of musical expression. With space for over 130,000 party people on the site there is a large need for entertainment and it is estimated that a crew of around 30,000 are needed to make this event into a bubbling cauldron of art and culture that can throw up surprises with every step.
Musically you can expect everything from well-known and established stars, cutting edge artists and a large number of Scandinavian acts at Roskilde. These are confined to tents and stages that generally stick to the same blend of sound throughout the duration of the festival, allowing those who like a particular vibe to find their niche.
With plenty of space for camping and all manner of high jinks, expect an adult, intelligent and open crowd as Roskilde. Don’t think for a moment however that this means there’s a deficit in fun and games, as the open, expressive and unpretentious atmosphere is both addictive and immersive and will have you letting your guard down in no time. If you want to travel to a festival that promises both smiles and a cultural awakening then this is one place you have to try.
